Rock Hill is located in north central South Carolina just off Interstate 77, about 15 miles below the North Carolina border and 25 miles south of downtown Charlotte. The largest city in York County and the fifth largest city in South Carolina, Rock Hill is also the commercial and financial center of the county.
Rock Hill is home to three institutes of higher education. Winthrop University has over 6,000 students and was recently named one of the Top Ten Regional Public Universities in the South in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges" 2006 edition. The university offers bachelor and master degree programs.
York Technical College has an enrollment of over 4,000 credit students in more than 70 credit programs. In a joint collaboration, 3D Systems will build a 17,000-square-foot training center, dubbed “3D Systems University,” dedicated to innovative products, services and technologies. Clinton Junior College, a liberal arts college.
Medical campuses and technology parks weave throughout Rock Hill, including the new headquarters of 3D Systems which is moving its offices from California this year, bringing more high-paying jobs in the tech sector.Average salaries at 3D Systems will be $80,000 per year. A technologytown, Rock Hill’s locally owned utilities are extending networks of fiber optic cable throughout the city.
Piedmont Medical Center is a 288-bed hospital and one of upstate South Carolina's premier acute care facilities. The medical campus now features a new 34-million dollar Women's Center. Specialized physicians offices and medical parks also cluster along nearby avenues and boulevards, employing many residents in the local healthcare industry.
Rock Hill’s downtown center will be the heart of future transit systems linking Rock Hill to Charlotte and beyond. Existing rail systems and rail-based destinations like downtown, Winthrop University and Piedmont Medical Center will drive this initiative. The vision includes creating a transit-oriented community developed around light rail and trolleys.
